It is with great sadness I write to say that Peggy Pickwoad passed away at her home on November 24th. Her health had deteriorated considerably since she had a turn-over carriage accident some 18 months ago, but on recovery she still continued her driving, including outings with the BDS and our own little jaunts out together.

Throughout her life Peggy lived for her horses and ponies: she threw herself into driving when she decided, in her mid-seventies, that it was about time to give up hunting on her 16hh thoroughbred! She joined both the Great Western Harness Club and the Devon BDS and with her much-loved pony, Flikka,  she became a stalwart participant and supporter of both. Driving trials were her greatest pleasure and she competed successfully for almost ten years, including completing Newnham on many occasions.

Peggy was a characterful, enthusiastic and determined person who lived life to the full, who had a wonderful sense of humour  and who was much loved by her many friends. Her passing is very much the end of an era but she has enriched so many lives that one feels her spirit will live on.

Peggy: as a time-honoured whip, as my introduction to the driving world, as a kindred spirit and as a dear friend, I salute you.

Kate Fincham-Powell

The funeral will take place on Monday 8th December at 2.45pm  at Exeter Crematorium. At Peggy’s request there is to be no mourning attire and no flowers. A retiring collection will be made in aid of Riding for the Disable
