What does a steward do?

There are a variety of jobs for stewards – also see “What are carriage driving trials?”

Ring stewards for dressage and cones

At the start or finish of a section – recording times and marshalling competitors (in pairs)

Observing and timing obstacles (in groups of 3-5)

At key points of the course for safety, e.g. road crossings

We are always on the look out for people to come and steward at our events.  No experience is necessary but it is an out activity which subjects you to all weathers.  An interest in horse sports is an advantage but knowledge of carriage driving is not necessary.

The GWHC run a stewards training day most years – usually in April to make people aware of what is involved.  If you are new to stewarding you will not be left on your own as obstacle stewards operate in teams of 3 to 5 people. Prior attendance at the training day is useful but not essential.

The club will give you lunch, the rest of the team will help keep you entertained.  All in all we hope you will have a good day out and then volunteer to come and do it again!

Dear Member/Steward

Belated Happy New Year wishes! It’s that time of year again to be looking forward to the coming outdoor driving season. We hope that those of you who helped run our club events last year enjoyed yourselves and would like to come and help us again -  [we have ordered sunshine for all our events this year!] If you haven’t stewarded for a while, why not come and join us at an event? We provide lunch/refreshments, a stewards’ draw and hopefully an enjoyable social day out in the sunny [?] countryside! We very much appreciate all your offers of help and we would be most grateful if you could let us know your availability by filling in the form below and returning it to me at the above address. Alternatively you can e-mail the form to the club – a copy can be found on the web-site.

This year we are trying to keep members and stewards more up to date with club news and events via email. If you would like to be added to our e-mailing list please let GWHC know your e-mail address.

Many thanks and best regards, Kate (stewards secretary).
